Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the kyai’s leadership in the implementation of the Salafiyah learning method at Madrasah Diniyah. The kyai, as a central figure in traditional Islamic education, holds a vital position in guiding, managing, and shaping the learning atmosphere within the institution. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research explores how leadership values such as wisdom, discipline, exemplary conduct, and spiritual authority influence the effectiveness of the Salafiyah method in teaching classical Islamic sciences. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving teachers, students, and administrators. The findings reveal that the kyai’s leadership style significantly determines the success of Salafiyah-based learning. The kyai not only functions as an educator but also as a moral and spiritual leader who nurtures students’ character and religious devotion. Effective leadership ensures that the Salafiyah method emphasizing taḥfīẓ, tafsīr, naḥwu ṣarf, and classical texts (kitab kuning) runs systematically and maintains its authenticity in the modern educational context. Furthermore, the study highlights that collaborative management between the kyai and teaching staff enhances institutional discipline and academic outcomes. In conclusion, the leadership of the kyai plays a strategic role in preserving the values of Islamic tradition while adapting to contemporary educational challenges. The study recommends strengthening leadership training and institutional management to ensure the sustainability of Salafiyah education in Madrasah Diniyah.
